The following Range Safety rules exist for safe and courteous shooting while using the Club's shooting ranges. In addition to the Range Safety Rules specified here. unique rules and safety recommendations exist for different ranges and shooting disciplines.  It is the responsibility of each member to know the rules that apply to the range and discipline they are using.

Range Officers (ROs) have complete control over the shotgun range and shooters.

  • It is strictly prohibited for anyone to consume or be under the influence of alcohol or any drug, prescription or otherwise, that can impair a Member's or Guest's judgement or reflexes while on a range.
  • Red flag means shooting in progress on the range.
  • All shooting, including patterning, on the Trap Range must be supervised by a Club qualified Range Officer.
  • All firearms entering the trap range area must be uncased and proven safe at the Safe House; then they are to be put in a gun rack beside the field.
  • Ammunition to be located separate from gun racks and is never to be taken to the Safe House.
  • Maximum 2 3/4 length shotshells, shot size 7 1/2 and smaller only, lead only, 3 drams maximum powder.
  • All shotguns intended for use must be approved by the RO on duty.

  • Shooters must report to a Range Officer when first entering the range, then Sign In.

  • Ear and eye protection are mandatory.
  • First-time shooters must be supervised by an experienced shooter or RO.
  • Juniors must be supervised by an experienced shooter or RO.

Gun Safety

  • All shotguns to be unloaded until on the firing line, ready to shoot, and the shooter ahead has fired.
  • Never move from station to station with a loaded gun.
  • Always point guns, even when unloaded, away from people and equipment.
  • On firing line, always keep gun pointed downrange.
  • Do not pick up spent shells until shooting has stopped and you have racked your shotgun.
  • A shotgun must be loaded with one shell only, unless shooting doubles.
  • Shotguns must be unloaded and racked whenever anyone moves ahead of firing line to load targets or do maintenance in trap house. A yellow caution flag is displayed on the house.
  • The action on shotguns must be kept open at all times while moving to and from the shooting line or moving from post to post when shooting is in progress. Semi-autos and pumps must be carried vertically, barrel up.
  • Never track a target while waiting your turn to shoot.

  • After proving safe, guns are to be put in a gun rack beside the field.
  • All carried guns must be unloaded and have actions open; semi-autos and pumps must be carried vertically.
  • Ammunition to be located separate from gun racks and is never be taken into the Safe House.

Trap Range Policy

  • Shooters are expected to help the RO loading the trap houses and doing other light maintenance. Remember, everyone is a volunteer.
  • Trap fields 1 and 2 and the shotgun patterning area may be used during the same hours as all other KDFGC ranges provided a Club qualified RO is present to supervise.
  • If a member wants to host a group of shooters during other times, a Club qualified RO must supervise.
